Whether you’re looking to relax on a tranquil white sandy bay, get active, go paddle boarding, enjoy crabbing, or just sitting to sample the local seafood, there’s plenty of choice near Ullapool.
There are 14 wonderful beaches within 50 miles to chose from so you will be spoilt for choice.
Our favourite:
Achmelvich Bay
Achmelvic Bay is one of the most popular beaches which can be reached within an hour’s drive from Loch Broom Cabins.
It’s our favourite beach with it’s pure white sand and turquoise waters which has been awarded a Blue Flag and offers shallow water swimming. It’s a great spot for water sports such as canoeing, kayaking, paddle boarding and wild water swimming.
Paddle Boards
You can hire paddleboards from Ullapool Harbour at Whatsupp Ullapool. They provide the boards deflated in a bag ready to transport. You can easily fit in two boards into the boot of a medium-sized car. They are very easy to transport, inflate and deflate afterwards. All equipment and instructions are provided.
Kayaking
Summer Isles Kayaking is based in Ullapool and Lochinver and they offer kayaking, fishing and foraging trips. You will explore the coast line near Achmelvich and fish for your tea from your kayak. Pollock, mackerel and sea trout are frequently caught as well as tasty wild treats. You will have fun landing on a beach and cooking up your fish, mussels and seaweed etc.
Dog Friendly
Dogs are allowed on the beach under close supervision as there are sheep on the crofts close by.
Food and Drinks
During the summer months, you can buy fish and chips at the shop on the caravan park and there is a small drinks and snack cabin near the beach too. Out of season it is best to take a selection of snacks and drinks along with you just in-case they are not open.
After your visit to the beach, the village of Lochinver is worth a popping along to see. It is 3 miles from the beach and it has a very good highland pottery shop and excellent food at Lochinver Larder and Peets Restaurant.
Directions to Achmelvich Bay
Just before you reach Lochinver, turn right – signposted Clachtoll. The beach is a 3 mile drive down a single track road. There are toilet facilities and parking spaces available.
